Chinese Menu

I received an attractive flyer in the mail announcing a new restaurant opened in town offering Chinese-Japanese cuisine. Most of the dishes listed on the menu I could recognize and within my family I’m know for being reasonably adventuresome when it comes to trying new things. But a couple of the menu items would cause even me to pause before ordering:

Strange Flavored Chicken
Dry Cooked Fresh Green Beans with Pickles
Crispy Duck with Bones

You wouldn't like the Strange Flavored Chicken "Mr. Adventure": it has garlic...oooh!

I've had it before; it is strange. Garlic, soy sauce, sesame sauce, ginger root, coriander, chili oil, garlic, wine vinegar.

I agree, this doesn't sound like my "cup of tea." But as a grad student at a conference in Winnepeg (lots of Chinese moved there during he Canadian railroad building days),I did order "Beef with Fungus." It was beef with a type of flat mushroom on top. It looked a lot like the green lichen that clings to the surface of weathered rocks. I suspect it was just peeled off off boulders out back. Tasted like rubber.

That's how you know it's authentic, when it sounds stupid in English.
